Chicago Trip to the Aquarium and American Girl Place

My dad had to travel to Chicago for business and my mom, the girls, and I went with him. We rode up with my dad on what turned out to be a 10 hour drive. That was rough with the kids. But we had a great time while we were there. It was my first experience in a big city with kids. I have to say that went smoother than I had imagined. I took the double stroller and put the girls in it and walked about 5 blocks to catch the bus. The girls enjoyed being on the bus and some of the people around us seemed to be helpful with us getting the huge stroller and two kids on and off the bus. Our first day in Chicago we went to the Shedd aquarium. There were several smaller tanks of fish and then a few huge tanks with coral reefs and salt-water fish. The girls liked seeing the different fish, ("Nemo, Dorey, and Flounder" especially), but I think their favorite was the 4D Sponge Bob movie. They were hilarious with the 3D movie effects, and the bubbles floating through the audience. Also there were simulations with chair movement and something which felt like a mouse running across the back of our legs. The girls laugh and giggled the entire time. It was cute hearing their reaction and watching them lean back to avoid getting "hit" in the face with the things Sponge Bob was throwing at them.

The second day was our American Girl Place day! Wow, what a place for little girls! I think I enjoyed it as much as they did, though. They loved seeing all the American Girl dolls with their miniture sized food, accessories, and clothes. Maylen was so excited about picking out her doll that Nana and Papa were giving her for her birthday. And she was given money by Grammy too to get some things to go with her doll. As she was looking at the dolls, Nana told her to look at everything before deciding which doll she wanted. Maylen said, "But if I see everything, then I will want everything." So true, isn't it?!
Maylen picked out Kit as the doll she wanted. She also picked out Kit's birthday dress and birthday food. Since we have been home she has had a tea party with her dolls and food every day. I'm glad she is enjoying it so much.
Adeline picked out a Bitty Twin, a little girl version of an American Girl. She has named this doll, "Holly," after Maylen helped her go through a bunch of names. Holly has brunette little piggy tails like Adeline. With the money Grammy gave her, Adeline got Holly a mini backpack with toddler snacks and juice boxes, and the Bitty Baby Birthday set. Adeline has carried Holly around with her constantly and is great about sharing with her and offering her food.
While we were there we had Samantha cleaned and her hair fixed in AG salon. Samatha was my AG doll that I got about 21 years ago soon after the doll debuted by the Pleasant Company. The dolls were made in Germany by a small family company and they were catalog only at the time. Their bodies were made with a white cloth instead of the nude color cloth they are made with now. The lady at the salon when on and on about how special it was that I had an original Samantha and how beautiful and well cared for the doll was. It was neat hearing her talk about the changes the dolls have undergone since they first came out.
Part of our American Girl experience was getting to each lunch there. It was like high tea in the dining room. We were served 4 courses and the girls had their dolls in high-chairs at the table for the meal. We sang "happy birthday" to Adeline since it was just 3 days before her birthday. I think the girls really enjoyed the experience.
On the way back to Memphis, when we stopped for dinner, Maylen said "I wish Kit was with here. She would really like to see my ice cream with sprinkles." I love her imagination!

The girls had a great time on our trip. They were both exhaused by the time we got back. William asked Maylen a couple days after we had gotten home if Maylen wanted to go to Chicago again. She first said, yeah, and then stopped herself and said, "no, that car ride is just so long."

Funny Conversations with the Girls

Adeline has lately been asking if we are going to have a new baby at our house. I asked her if she would like that. She said, yes, that she would like a baby sister. A few days ago we were at American Girl Place and I asked her if she would like one of the big dolls, or one of the Bitty Babies. She looked at me and said, yes, I want a baby brother or sister! Haha that wasn't exactly the answer I was looking for.

Maylen was talking to me in the bathroom while I was getting ready the other day. She was asking me about when she was born. She loves me to tell her about what a special gift her birth was to our family. I can't remember exactly how the conversation started, but I thought this part was funny...

Ashley: "I wanted a baby and then almost a year later you were born."
Maylen: She looked at me and asked "How did that happen?"
A: "What? How did what happen?"
M: "How did you want a baby and then you had me?"
A: "Well, I guess like the verse in the Bible in I Samuel. 'I asked the Lord for a child and the Lord gave me what I asked of Him.'"
M: "So if I ask God for a baby brother, He will give me one?"
A: "Well, maybe. But you better be careful what you ask God for." hehe

I'm not sure what has given them the idea to talk about babies. Maybe it's because their Aunt Holly is pregnant. But it's funny to hear them say that they want to have a baby brother or sister.

Sweet Adeline is 3!

Our Sweet Adeline and baby of the family is now 3! I can hardly believe it. She was due March 15, and I was not dilated at all-- I thought she would be late. But I woke up on March the 7th at 7 am in labor and had her at 7:20 pm. She was 7 lbs, 11 oz. and 19 inches long. Today she weighs 30 lbs and is 35 1/2" tall. She is our petite little girl-- she's only 25th percentile for height. I guess she get's that from my side of the family. Her spirit is far beyond her size. Much like she surprised me by being early, she surprises me daily with the things she does. She has become quite the character. She makes us laugh everyday. She is our dare-devil. While Maylen is very reserved and cautious, Adeline is ready to try everything. She is a ham! She loves playing with Maylen. It's not uncommon to see them standing next to each other, arms around each other, looking at something. They definitely have their moments, but they have become best friends. I love how much they enjoy each other.

Oh the Snow!

Yesterday afternoon it starting snowing about 3:00 pm and continued to snow until about 6 am this morning. There were drifts that were knee deep for the girls! It took about 20 minutes for me to bundle them up to go out in the cold. I think they only stayed out for about 10 minutes.

William put Adeline in a snow drift to see how high it would go.

Maylen's 5th Birthday!

I can't believe my sweet Maylen turned 5 on Friday, Feb. 27th. She was born on a Friday, on a very rare snowy day in Charlotte, NC. We are so thankful to the Lord for Maylen's birth. She is such a smart girl, and a quick learner. She is already reading and adding to her "sight word" vocabulary. She is a leader and a very mothering big sister. She is our helper around the house. We are so proud of her, and love her very much!

Hair cuts and Mamaw's Birthday

I'm way behind on my posts. At the beginning of February I decided it was time for the girls to get their hair cut. Here are some pictures. This was Adeline's first haircut. Her hair had gotten so long! I thought we needed to let it get a little thicker and fuller.

The "after" photo. That's quite a haircut!

I forgot to take a "before" picture of Maylen. I cut her hair about 2-3".

Mamaw, my grandmother, turned 89 this year! Here are some pictures of her with her great-grandchildren!
